This article reviews the role of cultural Islam in the national political stage. During the New Order, cultural Islam tended to withdraw from political activities because they did not want to be trapped in conditions that were colored by the hustle and bustle. Cultural Islam only took care of worship activities, especially in the pesantren environment. The struggle of cultural Islam is not only to maintain the sovereignty of the NKRI, but is also encouraged to display the image of Islam in the public space as a religion that loves peace and is full of tolerance and brings benefits to all mankind without regard to differences in ethnicity, religion, race, customs, and between groups.
